Containing the West
Is any land big enough to bear all the schemes we humans devise for defining, exploiting, or enchanting the elements of our smallish planet? In the American West illusions and contradictions are laid bare, their edges not softened by gentle light or kindly vegetation. We are fascinated by attempts to impose human-scale “order” on this vast terrain.
